Is there a British school in Belgrade?

One school is inspected under a British scheme. Eleven teach Cambridge, which is not the same thing, and the British-inspected one finishes American.

What a national school looks like here

France and Germany each run a school here that their own state stands behind, and the paperwork is public and specific.

École française de Belgrade has been homologué by the French Ministry of Education since 4 March 1986, covering all fifteen levels from petite section to terminale, and is conventionné with the AEFE, the French state's overseas schools agency. Deutsche Schule Belgrad holds the title Exzellente Deutsche Auslandsschule, awarded in 2013 and reconfirmed by a Bund-Länder-Inspektion in 2023, and its Deutsches Internationales Abitur is treated as a German domestic qualification for university admission.

That is what a national school looks like: a named state body, a named process, a date. There is nothing of that kind for England in Belgrade. No British government agency runs, funds or accredits a school in this city.

The one with a British inspection

British International School Belgrade, founded in 1997, is the closest thing and the only one with a British inspection behind it. It is registered with British Schools Overseas, URN 152207, and was inspected over three days on 12 to 14 May 2025. That is a real, checkable, British process, and no other school in this guide has anything comparable.

Then there is the part that surprises families, and it comes from the school's own pages. Its Upper Secondary page states that students not following the Cambridge programme “would be entered for the University of Nebraska curriculum in Years 12 and 13”, and lists subjects including American History, American Government, Career Planning and Personal Finance. Its homepage describes the same thing as an “American High School Diploma”. Those are two different claims about the same two years, and we have not yet asked the school which it means.

So the most British-sounding school in the city offers, at the top end, either Cambridge A Levels or an American route. That is not a criticism of the school, which is open about both on its own site. It is a warning against reading the name as a description of the curriculum.

A Cambridge school is not a British school

This is the confusion the question usually rests on, and it is worth being exact about.

Cambridge International is a British examination board, part of the University of Cambridge. Its curriculum is written for international schools and is not the English National Curriculum, which is what a school in England teaches. A Cambridge school in Belgrade prepares children for IGCSE and A Level, which are British qualifications, and that genuinely does transfer to a British school or university. But the school itself is not British, is not inspected by Ofsted or any British body, and is not required to teach anything England requires.

Eleven schools in this guide teach some part of a Cambridge programme, from London Gates and Young Sparrows at primary only, up to the six that run the full ladder through IGCSE to A Level. Which ones is set out on the Cambridge page, and several of those claims could not be confirmed against any register at all, which is set out here.

What that means in practice

Three practical consequences, depending on what the family is actually after.

• If you are returning to the English system, IGCSE and A Level are what matter, and six schools here offer both. The school's name and its flag do not. Ask which examination centre the school uses and whether exams are sat on site.
• If you want English school culture – houses, uniform, a British inspection regime, staff recruited from the United Kingdom – British International School is the only one with the inspection, and its report is public through the British Schools Overseas scheme.
• If you want an American route, read the American page first: there is no American school in Belgrade either, and the Nebraska option at British International School is one of the two things American families here end up considering.
