Belgrade schools for diplomatic families
The school with an embassy on its board, the one that is an embassy, the two whose certificate transfers home without an exam, and how to enrol before you land.

A posting has three dates a school choice must survive: the day you arrive, the day you leave, and the day the next posting begins somewhere else. Belgrade is unusually kind on the first — nine of the nineteen schools admit year-round, so a January arrival is ordinary. On the second and third, the schools differ sharply. One school was founded by an ambassador's wife and still writes government dependants into its admissions priority; one belongs to an embassy; two are national schools whose certificate transfers into their home system without an exam; and the Cambridge and IB schools give a certificate that the next country will recognise.
The school with an embassy on its board, and the one that is an embassy
The International School of Belgrade was founded in 1948 as the Foreign School by Lady Peake, the wife of the British Ambassador, and its governance still shows it: a board of seven to ten, three of them appointed by the U.S. Ambassador. Its published admissions priority order is, first, dependants of U.S. Government sponsored and contract employees, of faculty, and current students; second, non-permanent residents of Serbia; third, permanent residents. It caps any single nationality at 35% of enrolment in each grade — with the first category, the government dependants, and scholarship students exempt from the cap. It runs the full IB continuum in English from age 3 to 18, tests applicants abroad online rather than requiring a visit, and its bus routes name the diplomatic area in Banovo Brdo. Tuition is charged in US dollars and the capital fee in euros — a genuine dual-currency structure, not an error.
The General Education School at the Embassy of Russia is an embassy institution rather than a school with an embassy connection: a structural subdivision founded by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, running the Russian eleven-year ladder in Russian, in Novi Beograd, with the children of posted federal staff admitted as of right and no tuition charged.
The two national schools whose certificate travels home
Two schools teach a national system from beginning to end, and for a family that will be posted again, the value is in what happens at the far end.
École française de Belgrade holds full AEFE homologation, which the school describes as meaning a pupil can transfer into any French or AEFE school worldwide without an entrance examination. It has no nationality requirement: children arriving from a non-French system sit a placement test, children transferring within the French network do not. It is also the one school in this guide with a real deadline — pre-registration for new pupils opens in early February for the following September (9 February 2026 for 2026/27), through the Eduka portal — so a family that knows its posting a year ahead should mark it.
Deutsche Schule Belgrad holds the Exzellente Deutsche Auslandsschule seal, reconfirmed in 2023, and leads to the Deutsches Internationales Abitur, whose holders are treated as Bildungsinländer for German university admission. Entry is gated on German competence, not passport: native speakers sit an aptitude test around March or April, non-native speakers a language assessment as well, and a non-native child needs a year of kindergarten before Vorschule and two years of pre-school before Grade 1. A family arriving with a small child can enter the German system by starting early; one arriving with a twelve-year-old and no German generally cannot.
Enrolling before you land
Most of these schools can be joined from abroad, and several say so. What to send, when the school will answer, and what certificate the child leaves with — the last column is what the next posting will ask about.

Where the schools are, relative to the embassies
Eleven of the nineteen schools have a campus in Dedinje, Senjak or Banovo Brdo — three adjoining neighbourhoods in the south-west where most embassies and residences also are — so the choice of school usually settles the choice of flat rather than the other way round. The exceptions that matter for this reader: the Russian Embassy school, Westbridge and the state Deseta gimnazija are in Novi Beograd, BIS is in Voždovac, the École française and Deutsche Schule are in Senjak, and ISB's own buses run to Dedinje, Senjak, the diplomatic area in Banovo Brdo and parts of New Belgrade and downtown. Questions families ask
Which Belgrade school gives priority to diplomats' children?
The International School of Belgrade publishes an admissions priority order that puts dependants of U.S. Government sponsored and contract employees first, then non-permanent residents of Serbia, then permanent residents, and caps any single nationality at 35% of a grade, with that first category and scholarship students exempt from the cap. The Russian Embassy school admits the children of posted Russian federal staff as of right. No other school in this guide publishes a priority rule.
Can we enrol our child in a Belgrade school before we arrive?
At most schools, yes. The International School of Belgrade offers online cognitive testing for applicants abroad; the École française takes pre-registration through its Eduka portal; the others accept documents by email and decide on reports and, in some cases, a placement test on arrival. Nine of the nineteen admit year-round, so a mid-year posting is ordinary here.
Which Belgrade school certificate transfers best to the next posting?
The IB Diploma (ISB, Ruđer Bošković, Crnjanski, the state Deseta gimnazija), Cambridge A Levels (the British-curriculum group) and the Deutsches Internationales Abitur are recognised internationally; the École française's AEFE homologation means transfer into any French or AEFE school worldwide without an entrance examination. Is there an application deadline for diplomatic families in Belgrade?
Only at the École française, whose pre-registration for new pupils opens in early February for the following September, and, in practice, at Deutsche Schule Belgrad, whose entrance tests run around March and April.
