1.School Spotlight & Autumn 2026

Please briefly introduce your school and share one exciting project, club, event, initiative or campus update launching this autumn.

The Deutsche Schule Belgrad was founded in 1854, when Pastor Graun held the first service on 21 May and lessons began the next day. Today it is an excellence-sealed German school abroad in Senjak with almost 300 students from over 20 nationalities. Children move from kindergarten to grade 12 and the German Abitur, taught in German from grade 1. Serbian is the second language and we also offer English and French. On 2 September we had the enrolment ceremony for the new first grade and in September we had a visit from a class of students from Germany.

2.Student Voice & Community

Can you share a student-led initiative, club, tradition or part of everyday school life that reflects the spirit of your student community?

Students have a real say in school life. The SMV, our student council, meets on a regular basis, organises for example theme days, the spring ball of the upper classes and the annual flea market. Every class runs its own Klassenrat (class council), where decisions are taken together. Sometimes the SMV meets the board members to discuss together important questions that affect the students. Traditions hold the year in shape: the Christmas bazaar on the last school day before the winter holidays, project days in late June and the summer festival.

3.Future Skills & Beyond Academics

How does your school empower students to become leaders, creators and global thinkers beyond the classroom?

Three values carry everything we do: Sustainable education, critical and independent thinking and democratic engagement. We are an accredited German School abroad and our DIA has the same status as an Abitur obtained in Germany. It opens doors to universities worldwide. Beside lessons there are working groups in primary and secondary, the JeKi music programme in primary school, sports tournaments, charity projects, a Clean-up Day for the environment and regular exchange with students from Germany or other German Schools from the region.

4.The School Vibe – in Three Words

Describe your school atmosphere in just three words, then share one short message for students across Belgrade this autumn.

Sustainable. Critical. Democratic.

Take responsibility, look after one another and stay curious about every person, language and culture in the room. That is how a small school becomes a big world.
